Hope Cove
Knot-in has 5 bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large open plan sitting room / dining room and a semi open plan kitchen ensuring chef & bottle washer may share in the day with the sofa surfers, the pianists, the puzzlers and the snoozing. Did I mention the piano? There is a fully equipped utility room with washing and drying machines plus a large playroom for board games, cards or, perish the thought, even video games!
Despite your wearying journey to Knot-in (maybe with the obligatory 'are we nearly there yet?' ), from the moment you first walk into the sitting room you will be captivated by the fabulous views, subject to weather and time of night of course! < Other views are also available (apparently) >
The garden is lovely to enjoy on a warm summer day and it looks out to sea for as far as the eye can see, a fantastic view to the horizon, but it is not fenced and there is a steep slope to the road so please be very careful, particularly with children in tow.
Children must be supervised at all times anywhere in the garden.
Knot-In is perched above the delightful historic fishing village of Hope Cove with uninterrupted sweeping views right across Bigbury Bay: from Thurlestone, Burgh Island, the Mew Stone standing by Plymouth Sound, the Eddystone Lighthouse guiding mariners past treacherous rock shoals, to Bolt Tail, St Clements Church and Inner Hope.
A 3 minute stroll will find you in the village or on one of the beaches, sand under your feet. There is a well stocked and very helpful small Post Office and General Store with Off Licence, Tide Tables and Ice Cream! Be sure to visit the delightful 'Cove Café Bar' for breakfast, lunch, tea and evening dining, with a fantastic selection of craft beers, frequently featuring live music and Sky Sports, sometimes together! There is a pub, the Hope & Anchor, and do be sure to sample the excellent offerings from award winning local brewer, the Salcombe Brewery Company as well as the excellent Salcombe Gin from the Salcombe Distilling Co. or perhaps if your're feeling a little more adventurous, coming from over the border in cornwall, the Cornish Gin Company's Gold award winning hand crafted, copper still produced Elemental Gin .

the Village
Hope Cove . . .
has many moods, the quiet of the morning as daylight and the haunting cry of seagulls stir the World into life, the anticipation of your day by the sea, the aroma of coffee on the stove, breakfast on the go, the excitement and hubbub of the beach through the day, the whoops and excited screams of children, the tranquility of the evening with waves lapping along the shoreline. Sometimes stormy and sometimes calm, there is no formula for the inexplicable enchantment that Hope Cove showers on its visitors. There are no algorithms here, just Mother Nature going about her business, allowing you in on a few of her magnificent secrets, for a little while at least. We are all taken in, captivated by not only the beauty but also the destructive power she can, and often does, wield in the blink of an eye.
Tranquil Hope Cove

Still Hope Cove
Not so still Hope Cove
For the would-be fishermen, there are any number of prime fishing spots as well as opportunities to get out on the water and catch your supper of fresh Mackerel, perhaps Pollock (that is neither a typo nor a comment), even the odd Sea Bass. For the true 'one that got away that was 'th<---------->is big' fishermen, many a small boat will return to the beach with abundance to spare.
For those with a hankering for seafood on their holiday menu, speak to the Harbour Master or one of the few remaining local fishermen about a fresh crab or lobster, disappointment will surely rain only on those who don’t.
Goodness, I almost forgot the house, home for your holiday stay. Knotin really can be your home from home. It has a warming electric Aga to take the chill out of chilly bodies up from the beach, to dry towels by as well as to cook your supper on and, if Aga cooking isn't your thing it really doesn't matter, there is an electric oven and hob at your beck and call. The kitchen also has a combination microwave oven and a dishwasher that takes 15 place settings, (at least that's what it claims!)
You may still perch against the comfortingly warm Aga rail, as many have done before.

The windows overlooking Bigbury Bay will draw your attention away from the news, your smart phone will somehow seem less smart and once filled with reminders of your stay for cold winter evenings back home you will find a book, a puzzle, gazing at the ever changing views of the Mother Nature Show or simply sofa surfing will be all that is needed.

With luck, someone from your party will volunteer to make the drinks as family and friends gather to watch the awe-inspiring magnificence of Sunset over Bigbury Bay. Stand in the garden against the front wall of the house as a summers day draws to a close and the evening cools around you, it is an experience not to miss. The heat radiating from the natural stone, warmed by the sun, is quite remarkable and somehow comforting.
Later, when darkness envelopes the World, dress up warm, take a rug out onto the grass and stretch out to gaze up at the vastness of the Universe. Pick out the occasional shooting stars, find the Milky Way stretching away into unfathomable nothingness and reflect on man's total insignificance . . . . . before making your way back to the warmth of the house, a night-cap and bed, to wonder what it's all about as you drift off into another universe entirely. Can there be more than one universe I wonder? Just when I thought I had it cracked, something else to ponder on . . . .

Knot-in - Hope Cove
2 Final Points: - 1
1 - a Gentle warning: Hope Cove can be seriously addictive, incrediby relaxing . . . It is highly likely that Hope Cove will be good for your wellbeing, your family's and your friends, quite possibly for years to come.
My family have been regular visitors to this community for almost 60 years, we are not locals. We have learned to sail, water ski, wake board, fish, poke about in rock pools, swim, dive, kayak, play beach cricket and then while away the rest of the day on the sandy beaches or in the waters of the cove, even paddleboarding, how up to date is that! We've built sandcastles, sculpted boats from sand trying in vain to hold back the tide with no better luck than King Canute, so far! We've eaten cheese and pickle sandwiches on the beach and experienced the crunch of sand that inevitably finds its way into the mix. We've enjoyed the many coastal walks, the surrounding villages, visited Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, the delights of Salcombe, even, on very rare occasions, ventured the 40 minutes to Plymouth. I notice I've written in the past tense, I have no idea why, we still do all of the above with our children, and now, I can hardly believe this, with their children. We will need another week at Knot-in to get over the shock . . . any excuse will do, as we hope you may discover for yourself.
2 Final Points: 2
2 - The sea can be a truly immersive experience! but it can also be dangerous. The Big Blue Sea is wonderful fun to be beside, in, on and briefly under but it is also immensely powerful and not 'mans' natural environment.
Please take care, Hope Cove is blessed with very little in the way of currents and rips
but that doesn't make the water safe.
What makes water as safe as it can be is taking sensible precautions, treating it with respect and not being embarrassed or too 'big' to ask for help and advice. There are many families regularly on the beach who have been visitors over many years, talk to them, it is a very family friendly village. The Harbour Master, yes, there really is one, is on hand most of the time through the summer months, he will help with just about anything, (he's not much of a cook I hear). He is a very good first point of contact for advice on the beach, the water and even the weather prospects, believe it or not !
2 Final Points: 3 . . .
3 - . . . I know. . . 2 final points but stay with me on this one . . . : Knot-in doesn't have a monopoly on the fun and enjoyment to be had from Hope Cove and its surrounds, the Big Blue Sea, the beaches or the coastal walks and, of course, Knotin isn't the only property available for your holiday in Hope Cove!
If Knot-in is unavailable or just doesn't suit you there are alternative holiday homes in the village, surprising as this may seem!
You might like to visit Rest Assured Properties
to view alternative options.
You will never be sorry you have visited Hope Cove and are almost certain to leave wishing you didn't have to go, already looking forward to coming back. An alternative may not have the stunning views that Knot-in enjoys but it will be in or near the delights of Hope Cove and who knows, maybe we'll be able to welcome you as a guest to Knot-in next year, we certainly hope so.
2024 - Yep, its 2024 and summer is coming . . .
We have settled nicely into 2024 and are very happy to be preparing to welcome back a number of guests who are becoming ‘regulars’, Hope Cove seems to have that effect on so many !
There are changes in the village, the Post Office is neither a post office nor even called The Post Office - (its been the Post Office for too long now, it will always be The Post Office) The Beach Shop has emerged, lighter, brighter and ready to supply the urgent needs of families for beach toys, ice cream, trinkets, beach balls, more ice cream, general store items and local beers, gins, wines . . . all the normal requirements for a great holiday, other than guaranteed sunshine of course but, since this is Hope Cove, even that doesn’t really seem to matter - and, sitting in the bay window of Knot In watching the rain and the view of the Mother Nature show with a nice hot drink and a book placed on the arm rest of a comfortable chair, it really is a little piece of heaven.
2023 - Does anyone know where 21 & 22 are . . .
. . . we'd like them back, please!
So this year there is news, the cooking department has gone all electric - hey, I know, so modern and up to date - never fear, the warming aga is the same, it's just that it is no longer fuelled with oil and responds to changes of settings in hours instead of days, for those in a rush!
Just to keep up, security has tightened as a precaution. There are 3 external security cameras, one keeping watch over the drive area, one the back door and one the view. The cameras are only in use during the brief periods when the house is unoccupied, They are switched off at arrival time and back on at departure time. If anyone would like them to remain on for the duration of their stay please just let us know.
2020 - What a strange year for us all . . .
Sadly a number of our guests were unable to venture to Hope Cove and visit Knot in due to the global issues facing us all. Hopefully everyone will be able to re-arrange their holiday for 2021.
As lock-down has eased so we have been able to visit Knot In ourselves as well welcoming those guests able to take up their holiday as planned.
We wish everyone visiting this website, as well as those able to book some time at Knot In, well. Keep safe, science will crack the problem and whatever the World looks like the other side of the Covid pandemic we hope to welcome both new a returning guests to Knot In, whenever it is possible.
Hope Cove is a beautiful place, long may it stay that way . . .
Move over 2018 - was that 2019 that just whizzed by . . .?
How does that happen? You blink and there it is gone . . . !
We hope every one of our guests enjoyed the house every bit as much as we do.
Special thanks go to our guests who not only experienced a boiler glitch and at
least 1 rather cold night but who have rebooked for next year - (we can't promise
the same excitement on every visit!)
So that was 2018 - Knot In - your view with a room (5 rooms actually and stunning, if changing, views)
It all went so quickly!! We do hope our guests thoroughly enjoyed their stay in Hope Cove and we look forward to seeing those of you who have already re-booked as well as welcoming our new 2019 guests to Knot-In.
The Blue Room
It's Blue, obviously. A huge double bed as well as two 3 ft single beds for families to share with fabulous views out to sea, of Bolt Tail and across to Inner Hope . . .
The Pink Room
. . . yes, it's Pink. A huge double bed
with views that make getting up in
the morning almost superfluous!
The Yellow Room
Relax, it's not yellow,
it just used to be - 'nuff said !
A large double bed and views over
Inner Hope, the beach and
of St Clements Church
The White Room
Of course it's white, why else would it be called the White Room? Honestly!! . . . Anyway, a large double bed and
views of . . . the Sky, lots of light during
the day, not so much at night!
(we have electric light for that . . )
The 'Dorm'
3 x 3ft wide beds for adults or children, . Ideal for children to plan their next adventures or perhaps sleep off the exertions of the day they've just enjoyed.
The Utility Room
The really useful room.
I can never seem to find it myself
but I hear it's well equipped !
Washing Machine, Dryer,
drying rail, deep belfast sink
even a deep freeze!
The Kitchen
The beating heart of the 'home'.
Well equipped but . . . also happens
to have stunning views out to sea
and of Burgh Island. Definitely
worth a look, in my opinion.
The Living room
There is more to this room, the
space, the pine dresser, the comfy sofas, they're great but, really, it's all about the
fabulous views which may
have been mentioned above.
